Instructions for Transferring Domains to an Account at a Different Registrar

If you want to transfer your domain name away from PowerPipe.com to another domain registrar (like GoDaddy.com or Network Solutions), please follow these step-by-step instructions.

1) Sometimes, a web designer or web hosting company may ask you to transfer your domain to their own account at another registrar like GoDaddy.com or Network Solutions.  Later, if you wish to end the relationship, the web designer or hosting company controls your domain record.  Even worse, some hosting companies will list their company as the domain owner.

I suggest to you the same thing I tell my own friends and family --- don’t do it!   It is always best for you to maintain 100% control over your own domain account at your own registrar here at PowerPipe.com.  At PowerPipe.com, you can host with any hosting company anywhere in the world.   All you need to know is the hosting company’s Primary and Secondary DNS info.

Solution: ask the hosting company or web designer for their Primary and Secondary DNS info for their web hosting.  They should be willing to provide this information to you upon request.  Make a note of the Primary and Secondary DNS, and we will help you to set it on your domain record so that you maintain 100% complete control over your domain ownership and domain control panel while maintaining your own domain registration account at PowerPipe.com, even when you are hosting through another company.

2) If you want to transfer your domain away to another account at another registrar, please understand that once the domain is transferred, we can not protect your account or provide you with PowerPipe.com service.  We will do anything within reason to save a customer.  Please let us know what we can do to retain your business.  Whether it is services or pricing, you may be surprised how we can help.  Talk to us before you transfer and let’s see what we can do to help you out with services, pricing, or features.

3) Once you have decided to transfer, keep in mind that some registrars offer deep-discount loss-leaders to attract your business.  When a company provides to you a product at below their cost, we suggest that you understand completely the terms of your transfer.  You may be locked into renewing the following years at a much higher price at the gaining registrar.  Read the fine print in your new registrar’s User Agreement.  You may be very surprised by what you find there.  Call us to ask questions.  Our policy is to treat you like friends and family.

4) Your Masterlist is the source of automated tools you will need to transfer your domain away.  For security reasons, we will not provide an EPP authorization key or unlock a domain over the phone.  You must follow the procedure listed below.

Once you submit a transfer request to the gaining registrar, we become the losing registrar.  You will need two things: obtain an EPP transfer authorization key, and unlock the security lock on your domain (for com and net).  You will do both of these through the automated tools in your  Masterlist.

5) Make a note of the admin email address that appears on your domain’s Whois record.  Go to http://whois.domaintools.com and take a look at your Whois record (the official record of domain ownership).  What is the admin email address that you see on the domain record?  If this is a current email address, that is good (jump to Step 7).  If it is an old email address, that is bad.  You will need to update your contact record before proceeding further (see Step 6 below).

6) Updating your Whois contact record:  Go to http://www.powerpipe.com , then click on Your Account at the top of the page. Next, click on Option #3 -- Log In.  Use the password you created when you registered your domain.  Once logged in , click on the Contact section and update the contact record.  Wait 24 hours for the record to update, and then go to Step 7 to log in to your Masterlist.

If you’ve forgotten your password, that is bad.  Go to http://www.powerpipe.com, click on Web Hosting, then click on the Order Hosting link, fill out the form with the correct contact info, good email address, and new password.  Submit the form, and then select the Account Config service ($21).  Check out and get an Order Confirmation Number.  Send a fax to 512-597-2336 with a letter on letterhead and copy of a government-issued photo ID.  In your letter, be sure to reference the Order Confirmation Number and explain why you need the Whois record manually configured by one of our technicians.  Your Account Config  order will usually be processed within 24 hours or less.

7) Log in to your Masterlist.   If you have never before requested a password for your Masterlist, then go to http://www.powerpipe.com, click on Your Account, then click on Option #2, then click on “Need Password?”.  Enter the administrative email address you determined in Step 5, above.  Click “Get Password” and a password for your Masterlist  will be emailed to your admin email address.  If your admin email address (exactly as it appears in the Whois record from Step 5) is old or invalid, or if you do not have access to it, then see Step 6 above.  Once you receive your Masterlist password, return to Your Account, Option #2, and log in to your Masterlist.”

8) Once you are logged in to your Masterlist, look for the domain you want to unlock.  Click on the “modify” link to the right of the domain.  You will see a “Send EPP Authorization Key” button.  Click the button and the key will be emailed to you.

9) Stay logged in to your Masterlist.  Look for a link that says “Transfer Ownership/Transfer Registrars”.  Click on the link, read the few paragraphs there, then click the checkbox to agree.  You will then see a link that says “Unlock”.  Click this link, and your domain will be unlocked.

10) The 10 steps outlined here represent everything you need to transfer a domain.  The process is completely automated for your convenience.  For security reasons, we can not assist with transfer-outs by phone.  Please follow the steps outlined above.

Of course, we would like to offer you anything possible to retain your business, and we greatly value your patronage and feedback.  You will consistently save – long-term – by maintaining your account at PowerPipe.com.

If a high-volume deep-discount registrar has enticed you to transfer your domain away with loss-leader prices, we encourage you to read their fine print.  Be sure to read their user agreement to ensure you don’t get locked into an unpleasant surprise.  You might be surprised what you find there!  Some of the monster registrars are more interested in monopolizing the domain market rather than providing you with family-style service.  That is the one thing we want to provide to you: good, family-style service.  We’d like to know you by your first name on a friendly basis.  Please let us know how we can retain your business.

Very Best Regards,
